Introduction to Philosophy (Period 7)

Course Description

Course Description

Studying philosophy hones analytical reasoning, reading comprehension, logical argumentation, and independent thinking – all important elements of 21st-century education. The study of Philosophy helps students to improve their reasoning, discussion, and logical argumentation skills. Philosophical thought has been shown to promote socioemotional growth, independent thinking, and a positive self-esteem in students.

Engaging in philosophical inquiry together allows students to experience the pleasure of developing as persons – of growing intellectually. In his pioneering work on education, John Dewey maintained that young children enter school curious and motivated to learn (Dewey, 1938). Educational research shows that students perform better academically when they are engaged in their own learning and when they believe it is of personal value. Philosophy offers students the opportunity to raise questions and insights that are of direct relevance to their lives and in turn, engages their interest in learning about themselves and the world around them.
