The Los Angeles School of Global Studies At Miguel Contreras Learning Complex

Journalism and Media Studies

Course Description

How do we know what we know? What is Journalism? Who do you trust? What is “fake news?” What is “real” news? What is “hard” news? What are the messages we are getting designed to do? How do reporters put stories together? What is the ethical code they follow to ensure the story they are telling is the truth? This class will help you become a critical consumer of media, which includes news, as well as teach you reporting skills.  Students will be viewing news and writing stories about our school (field trips, sporting events, community news, feature stories, etc.) In this class you will be asking a multitude of questions, because that’s what reporters do.

There will be weekly reading and writing assignments. The majority of this class will consist of writing news stories for publication that are of interest to the Global Studies Community.
