Course Description:
Welcome to Ethnic Studies! This is a year-long course that asks scholars to examine how issues of race and ethnicity are constructed and shape life for underrepresented people in the United States. Scholars will have a unique opportunity to focus on issues that affect young people in Los Angeles as well as other issues that are national. The course uses various interdisciplinary approaches including historical, psychological, sociological, and intersectional lenses to understand and deconstruct power and inequality in the United States. Scholars will not only learn about these issues; they will work to provide suggestions and solutions as to how these social issues might be worked on by society. Additionally, scholars will develop their critical reading, writing, listening and speaking skills needed for academic success along with personal and community empowerment.
